Blade Runner - The Final Cut (BluRay)

Last summer marked 25th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner”. Being a fan of science-fiction and particularly of this movie since its original release in 1982, I was delighted to enjoy this outstanding high-definition release on Bluray disk.

I’ve prepared my sencha, turned off the lights, and inserted bluray disc in my Playstation 3. In the opening shots, the famous Hades landscape with the fireballs on the refinery towers look astonishing. I could not believe, pressed the pause button and came closer to my TV to examine all the details. The spinner flying over the Tyrel complex revealed the whole new dimension of details, colors, light and shades. The film is full of details, now you may actually read all the advertising displays, panels, robots at Sebastian’s apartment. It’s a whole new experience. It’s like watching the film for the first time!

At the end of the film I’ve played Scott’s introduction. He said that the film was scanned at 4k resolution from the original negative. I’ve performed some additional research and discovered that the visual effects, originally 65mm elements, were scanned at 8k resolution. That explains the new high definition experience of “Blade Runner”.

Add to the visual experience the 5.1 audio mix of Vangelis soundtrack together with Dick Morrissey, Niponia and Gail Laughton.

Last but not least, The final Cut contains some scenes that have not been included in any “Blade Runner” version before. Deckard’s dream of the unicorn may indicate that he is also a replicant. If he is in fact Nexus 7, more human than a human being than he is certainly weaker physically than his opponent Roy Nexus 6.

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments, will be lost in time, like tears, in rain… Time to die.” said Roy at the end of his four year lifespan.

How long would Deckard and Rachel live? It doesn’t matter, they’ve discovered sentiments and love.

“It’s too bad she won’t live; but then again, who does?”

BluRay vs HD-DVD

If you’ve read our earlier coverage on war between high-definition standards for storage, you already know that Toshiba decided to surrender the HD-DVD standard. As reported today by Nikkei News, the company will post 100bn yen losses ($1 billion) . Other partners in consortium are to follow with their reports. And all the early adopters of the standard among consumers. If only standard was set in a different way, all this money could have been used in a much smarter way…
